Powertrain and Range
The i3 launches in 50 xDrive configuration, utilizing BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology built on an 800-volt architecture. The powertrain combines an electrically excited synchronous motor on the rear axle with an asynchronous motor on the front, delivering a combined output of 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque - placing the electric sedan merely 10 horsepower shy of the manual, non-Competition G80 M3.
The vehicle achieves an EPA-estimated range of 440 miles and supports DC fast charging at up to 400kW, representing a 30 percent improvement over previous generation technology.
Exterior Design
Styling changes reflect the Vision Neue Klasse influence, most notably at the front where the signature kidney grilles now surround each headlight as a mask-like element. A recess between them leads into a valley that creates two bulges on a longer, more muscular hood.
The design eliminates the traditional Hofmeister kink - a first for the 3 Series - with the C-pillar now flicking upward to emphasize the rear haunches. At the rear, taillights feature a recess for the BMW roundel between them, reinterpreted as an L-shaped motif similar to the E46 generation.
Optional Iconic Glow lighting offers three animation modes: Relaxed, Excited, and Balanced. Flush door handles automatically extend when the Digital Key Plus - compatible with major smartphones and smartwatches and shareable via messaging apps - is detected.
The M Sport package adds aerodynamic enhancements, mirror-mounted M logos, and optional blue brake calipers. The launch model introduces M Le Castellet Blue metallic paint, exclusive to the i3 among eleven available color options spanning solid, frozen, and metallic finishes.
Interior and Technology
The cabin features a four-spoke steering wheel with an upper section spoke - a first for the 3 Series - along with an optional M Sport wheel featuring a flattened design. The Panoramic Vision infotainment system centers on a 17.9-inch display angled toward the driver and capable of displaying up to six movable, customizable widgets. A narrow continuous display stretches across the base of the windshield, complemented by an available 3D head-up display. The system incorporates a self-learning voice assistant with Amazon Alexa+ AI integration.
The steering wheel incorporates BMW's "Shy Tech" concept, with buttons that activate only when needed, though physical buttons remain for hazard warning lights and the parking brake. Standard equipment includes a wireless device charging pad and electric door latches on both front and rear doors.
Seating and Interior Themes
Seating options include multifunction and M Sport seats available in several themes:
- Contemporary: Veganza imitation leather in Agave Green, Digital White, Castanea, or Black
- M Design World: Black Veganza paired with M Performtex material
- BMW Individual: Real Merino leather
Practicality and Charging
Practicality features include a flat trunk floor with collapsing rear seats. The front trunk remains notably small and is better suited for storing charging cables rather than luggage. The vehicle utilizes a standard NACS charging port located on the right rear fender, ensuring broad compatibility with North America's growing fast-charging network.
Availability and Pricing
Production is scheduled to begin in August, with customer deliveries expected in the fall. Pricing and detailed option information will be announced closer to the launch timeframe.
BMW has also indicated that a combustion-powered 3 Series will follow the electric model, ensuring the continuation of both powertrain options within the lineup.
