Owner notes

8 Things to Know Before Buying BMW i3 in Hong Kong

Based on real owner experiences and reviews

  1. 01

Shock absorber dust covers, rubber bushings, and rear motor mounts all degrade with age. These are the key items to inspect before buying a used i3. Replacement parts are expensive relative to the car's low used price.

  2. 02

Owners recommend keeping daily charge between 20% and 80%, minimizing DC fast charging, and not leaving the battery at 100% for more than 48 hours. These habits help preserve long-term battery health on the i3.

  3. 03

A common scare on older i3s: the car displays a "transmission system error" warning when the 12V auxiliary battery is past its service life. Replacing the small 12V battery clears the fault. There is no actual transmission problem.

  4. 04

Earlier i3 models with the smaller battery manage around 160 km in real-world Hong Kong driving. Home charging is essential for anyone covering 80 km or more per day. Without a home charger, the i3 becomes impractical as a daily driver.

  5. 05

Used i3s are available from around HK$30,000 to HK$85,000 depending on year and battery size, making it one of the cheapest EVs in Hong Kong. Expect to budget for suspension and rubber component replacements on older examples.

  6. 06

The i3 uses unusually narrow tyres (155/70 R19 or 175/55 R20) and only three brands make them: Bridgestone Ecopia EP500, Continental EcoContact 6, and Michelin e-Primacy. Continental is noticeably quieter at highway speeds. Stock often needs to be special-ordered through the dealer or tyre shop.

  7. 07

The air conditioning system doubles as the battery thermal management system. If the compressor starts making excessive noise, it needs urgent attention. Replacement is expensive, and neglecting it accelerates battery degradation.

  8. 08

Independent BMW specialist garages in Hong Kong service the i3 at lower cost than the official dealer. Air conditioning filters are a simple DIY replacement every seven months. Brake fluid should be changed every two years.
