Owner notes

8 Things to Know Before Buying BMW iX in Hong Kong

Based on real owner experiences and reviews

  1. 01

The iX drives more like a luxury cruiser than a sports car. The steering feels light and the body rolls noticeably in corners, giving a boat-like sensation. On faster mountain roads, however, the chassis feels planted and confidence-inspiring.

  2. 02

The pre-facelift xDrive40 delivered around 300 to 310km in real-world Hong Kong driving, well below its 435km WLTP claim. The 2024 facelift raises the WLTP figure to over 600km, which should translate to a significant real-world improvement.

  3. 03

Replacement tyres cost around HK$3,000 each and can be hard to source. Some cars come fitted with Nexen tyres from the factory, which owners find lack grip on wet slopes. Pirelli or Michelin are the preferred upgrades.

  4. 04

Unlike most EVs, the iX uses a current-excited synchronous motor with carbon brushes that require periodic cleaning. This is an extra maintenance item that Tesla and most competitors do not have.

  5. 05

The standard brakes can feel inadequate given the car's weight and instant torque. Some owners have considered aftermarket upgrades but are cautious about interference with the regenerative braking system.

  6. 06

The rear seats do not slide forward or backward despite the spacious cabin. For a car at this price point, the fixed rear bench limits flexibility for passengers and cargo.

  7. 07

At over HK$800,000, the iX costs roughly double a Tesla Model Y with comparable range. Owners who chose it cite build quality, interior materials, and the Harman Kardon audio system as worth the premium.

  8. 08

The xDrive40 rides firmly on its standard suspension and can feel harsh over Hong Kong roads. The xDrive50 with adaptive air suspension is noticeably smoother, but pushes the price past HK$1 million.
