Owner notes

6 Things to Know Before Buying BYD e6 in Hong Kong

Based on real owner experiences and reviews

  1. 01

The first-generation e6 sold in Hong Kong between 2013 and 2017 suffered severe battery degradation within months of delivery. The only documented Hong Kong private owner reported range dropping from 300km at handover to under 150km within months. Getting a replacement battery required over six months of negotiation with BYD and cost an estimated HK$160,000. Anyone considering a used first-generation e6 should have the battery independently tested before committing to a purchase.

  2. 02

The 2022-generation e6 is a fundamentally different vehicle from the 2013-2017 models. The original was criticised for loud motor noise compared to a spinning drum washing machine, below-spec range, and a cramped cabin. The current generation is quieter, more spacious, and uses a taller crossover body that makes it easier for passengers to board and exit and for loading large luggage. The two generations share a name but are not comparable in quality or technology.

  3. 03

Despite its troubled reputation, one first-generation e6 in Hong Kong logged 280,000km over 10 years without a major mechanical failure. For a model widely criticised on launch, this suggests the basic drivetrain held up long-term when it was maintained and operated consistently.

  4. 04

The e6 is currently the only electric model approved for Hong Kong taxi licensing. The government is targeting 3,000 electric taxis by 2027, which in practice means BYD holds a monopoly on the city electric taxi fleet. Fleet operators who buy into the e6 are entirely dependent on BYD local parts supply and service network. If that support deteriorates, there is no alternative model to switch to.

  5. 05

Taxi drivers already queue at exchanges during shift changes to refuel. Converting to electric taxis means dozens or hundreds of vehicles needing charging bays at the same peak hours. Unlike petrol or LPG, which take minutes to refuel, even fast charging takes 30 minutes or more. Fleet operators evaluating the e6 should verify that their depot has sufficient charging bay capacity to handle simultaneous peak demand without drivers sitting idle.

  6. 06

The e6 operating model is built around fleet taxi infrastructure. Taxi depots run large dedicated charging parks where hundreds of vehicles charge simultaneously between shifts. Private buyers do not have access to this setup. Without home charging, a private e6 owner must depend entirely on public fast chargers, which adds time and cost that taxi fleet economics do not reflect.
