Owner notes
10 Things to Know Before Buying BYD Sealion 7 in Hong Kong
Based on real owner experiences and reviews
01
The Hong Kong version maxes out at 150kW DC fast charging, taking about 30 minutes from 30% to 80%. Overseas left-hand drive models on BYD's full EVO platform charge at up to 230kW. The dealer has confirmed the HK version does not use the EVO platform.
02
The infotainment screen supports multi-finger gestures most new owners miss. Place three or more fingers on the screen and swipe up or down to adjust temperature, or left and right for fan speed. A swipe-down quick menu works like a phone notification shade.
03
The HK version runs an 8-in-1 electric drive system instead of the 12-in-1 found in the mainland Chinese version. It is missing the smart boost module, smart flow module, smart self-heating module, and energy management system. Rear heated and cooled seats, auto-parking, a rear wiper, and two front parking sensors are also absent.
04
Real-world energy consumption sits around 17kWh per 100km. With the 82.5kWh battery, expect roughly 400km of usable range in normal Hong Kong driving conditions.
05
Service quality varies significantly between BYD dealers in Hong Kong. Harmony Auto (和諧汽車) is consistently recommended by owners over other authorised dealers.
06
Body roll is noticeable during cornering. The ride is tuned for family comfort rather than sporty handling, which becomes obvious on twistier Hong Kong roads.
07
The hazard light button is not a physical switch and sits very close to the collision avoidance toggle. In a panic stop, hitting the wrong button could disable the collision prevention system instead of activating hazard lights.
08
BYD's LFP blade battery is rated for roughly double the charge cycles of the ternary lithium batteries used in some competitors. LFP chemistry also has a lower fire risk, which is a consideration given ongoing safety debates about EV batteries in Hong Kong.
09
Apple CarPlay is supported, but Android Auto is not available on the HK version despite being offered on overseas models.
10
The Standard version at around HK$218,000 drops the HUD, ambient lighting, and Dynaudio audio system, replacing it with fewer speakers from an unnamed brand. The front suspension is also different. The gap to the Premium is about HK$50,000. Financing is available at 1.98% APR.
