8 Things to Know Before Buying MG ZS EV in Hong Kong
Based on real owner experiences and reviews
01
The ZS EV is built on a converted petrol car platform rather than a dedicated electric architecture. The floor sits higher than purpose-built EVs, battery packaging is less optimised, and there is no heat pump for cabin heating. In cooler months, the resistive heater draws noticeably more energy from the battery than heat pump-equipped competitors like the BYD ATTO 3.
02
Road noise is a weak point. Even with factory-fitted tyres ranked among the quietest on the market, the cabin lets through more highway noise than competitors at this price, suggesting the sound insulation itself is the issue rather than the tyre choice.
03
Interior build quality has visible inconsistencies. Button alignment on the centre console is uneven, with some controls sitting noticeably higher or lower than adjacent ones. At this budget level it may be forgivable, but it is immediately apparent when inspecting the cabin.
04
Replacement parts and accessories are widely available on Taobao at mainland China prices. For routine maintenance and minor repairs, this can significantly reduce long-term ownership costs compared to European or Japanese EVs.
05
The rear torsion beam suspension produces visible body roll during cornering. From outside the car, the rear end can be seen rising and dipping through turns more than expected for an SUV of this size.
06
The low purchase price and minimal running costs make the ZS EV popular with Uber and ride-hailing drivers in Hong Kong. With home charging, daily operating expenses are very low, making it a strong workhorse for high-mileage commercial use.
07
Equipment is basic even for the price. The cabin lacks automatic climate control, rear AC vents, electric seats, and a power tailgate. For buyers who just need reliable daily transport this is fine, but the BYD ATTO 3 offers considerably more kit at a similar price.
08
A charging port cover replacement costs around HK$3,000 including labour. Small EV-specific repairs can be surprisingly expensive, so check what the dealer warranty covers before buying.
