7 Things to Know Before Buying Tesla Model X in Hong Kong
Based on real owner experiences and reviews
01
At just over 2 metres wide, the Model X is wider than most Hong Kong parking spots, which were designed for Japanese cars around 1,850mm. Owners compare parking it to manoeuvring a minibus. Expect tight fits, door dings, and difficulty getting in and out of the car in standard HK car parks.
02
If the battery needs replacing on an older Model X, expect a bill of around HK$100,000 or more. Some owners go to mainland China for major work like chassis rebuilds, where labour costs roughly half what HK workshops charge.
03
Many used Model X units in Hong Kong come with lifetime free Supercharging, a perk from the original purchase. This is a real cost advantage if you rely on the Supercharger network, but factor in reduced range from aging batteries. Owners report needing to charge more frequently than the original specs suggest.
04
The Model X holds its resale value better than the Model S in Hong Kong, primarily because of the 6-seat configuration. With no new right-hand-drive units being produced, scarcity keeps pricing relatively firm. A 75D originally bought for around HK$600,000 was still selling for HK$400,000 after six years.
05
A used Model X at around HK$400,000 competes with a brand new Model Y Long Range at a similar price point. The X offers more seats and free Supercharging, but the Y comes with a full warranty, current software, and much newer hardware. Buyers should weigh the extra seats against the cost risk of maintaining an aging vehicle.
06
Tesla no longer produces right-hand-drive Model X units. Every Model X in Hong Kong is a used car. The newest ones date from around 2017 to 2020, so buyers are looking at vehicles that are at minimum 5 to 8 years old.
07
Pre-2021 Model X units have the older infotainment system, and the touchscreen is noticeably slow. Before buying, test the centre screen responsiveness during a test drive. The lag is significant compared to current Tesla models.
