Owner notes
9 Things to Know Before Buying Volvo EX40 in Hong Kong
Based on real owner experiences and reviews
01
Real-world range with normal driving and charging to 80% sits around 250 km, well below the WLTP figure of over 400 km. For most HK drivers covering under 100 km daily, this is still more than enough.
02
There is no vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability and no camping mode. Competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer both, which matters for buyers who want to use their car as a portable power source.
03
Base models do not include a head-up display, and it cannot be added even as a paid option. Buyers who want HUD need to step up to a higher trim.
04
The entry-level single-motor version offers nearly the same range as the dual-motor AWD but costs significantly less. For HK's compact daily distances, the extra power of the dual-motor is rarely needed.
05
The infotainment system originally launched without Chinese language support, frustrating owners in HK and Taiwan for an extended period. Chinese voice navigation has since been added, but the delay signalled how low-priority the Chinese-speaking market was for Volvo's software team.
06
Unlike competitors such as the Mercedes EQA, the EX40 has a usable front boot (frunk) in addition to the rear cargo area, giving it more practical total storage.
07
Ride comfort and suspension composure are noticeably better than the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Owners who test-drove both chose the XC40 Recharge specifically for how much smoother and quieter it feels on HK roads.
08
A raised centre tunnel runs through the rear floor, making the middle seat impractical. The rear air-conditioning vent housing also protrudes noticeably, which makes it awkward for passengers to slide in and out.
09
The CMA platform was designed from the outset to accommodate an EV drivetrain. The battery sits centrally in the floor, lowering the centre of gravity and contributing to stable, predictable handling.
