   The EQS's rounded, aerodynamic silhouette is polarising in Hong Kong. Many buyers expecting S-Class presence find it too smooth and featureless. The lack of sharp lines and the egg-shaped profile are the most commonly cited reasons for passing on this car, even among loyal Mercedes owners.

   Mercedes has confirmed the next-generation EQS will not continue as a standalone model. It will merge back into the regular S-Class lineup on a shared platform. Current EQS owners should factor in the resale implications of owning a car from a one-generation nameplate with no direct successor.

   The EQS targets S-Class buyers, but in Hong Kong most people at that level have a chauffeur. The main EV selling point of convenient home charging becomes irrelevant when someone else handles refuelling. This mismatch helps explain why the EQS struggled in a market where the S-Class sells well.

   The interior is widely praised, even by those who dislike the exterior. The Hyperscreen dashboard and cabin quality are considered a genuine step above the competition. If you can get past the outside, the inside delivers on the flagship promise.

   The full-width ambient lighting strip across the dashboard divides opinion. Some buyers find it nightclub-like and inappropriate for a luxury flagship. Others consider it a highlight. The colour and brightness can be adjusted or switched off entirely through the infotainment system.

   The subscription-locked performance features raise a practical concern for HK owners. During the annual Transport Department roadworthiness inspection, features that require an active subscription may not be testable if the subscription has lapsed, creating a potential compliance grey area.

   Mercedes offers a paid software upgrade to unlock additional acceleration on the EQS. The hardware is already in the car. Options include a monthly subscription starting at US$60 or a one-time purchase of US$1,950 to US$2,950 depending on the variant. The upgrade adds roughly 20 to 24 percent more power and cuts about one second from the 0-100 km/h time.
