8 Things to Know Before Buying Audi Q4 e-tron in Hong Kong

Based on real owner experiences and reviews

  1. 01

The Q4 e-tron uses rear drum brakes instead of disc brakes. This is a deliberate engineering choice on the MEB platform to reduce residual braking drag and extend range, but it is the single most criticised aspect of the car in Hong Kong. Many buyers find drum brakes unacceptable at a price above HK$470,000.

  2. 02

The Q4 e-tron 45 is rear-wheel drive only. Despite the Audi badge, it does not come with quattro all-wheel drive. Only the higher-spec Q4 50 e-tron quattro offers AWD, which is a dealbreaker for some buyers who associate Audi with all-wheel drive as standard.

  3. 03

The Hong Kong version launched two to three years after overseas markets and is considered stripped-down. No heated seats, only basic cruise control, no rear boot power outlet, and the steering wheel feels plasticky compared to expectations for the price. Wireless phone charging is included.

  4. 04

The S-line Sport+ package adds HK$75,000 to the base price. Buyers frequently cross-shop the Q4 e-tron against the Tesla Model Y Performance, which offers more power at a similar price, the BMW iX1, which is better equipped, and the Volkswagen ID.4, which shares the same platform for significantly less money.

  5. 05

The car doors feel noticeably thin when opened in person, lacking the heavy, solid feel expected from a European car at this price point. Worth checking at the showroom, as it is not something photos or videos convey.

  6. 06

The Q4 e-tron shares its MEB platform with the Volkswagen ID.4. The mechanical underpinnings are essentially the same, but the Q4 carries a substantial price premium for the Audi badge, interior finish, and styling. Budget-conscious buyers may want to compare the two side by side.

  7. 07

Interior build quality and material finish are a genuine strength. The steering feel is praised and the ride is comfortable. Owners who switched from Tesla cite the more premium cabin feel as a key reason, and those critical of other aspects still acknowledge the interior is a cut above mass-market EVs.

  8. 08

The rear-mounted electric motor produces an audible whine during acceleration that back seat passengers can hear. The driver typically does not notice it. Worth bringing someone along during a test drive to check from the rear seat.
