   A common scare on older i3s: the car displays a "transmission system error" warning when the 12V auxiliary battery is past its service life. Replacing the small 12V battery clears the fault. There is no actual transmission problem.

   Earlier i3 models with the smaller battery manage around 160 km in real-world Hong Kong driving. Home charging is essential for anyone covering 80 km or more per day. Without a home charger, the i3 becomes impractical as a daily driver.

   The air conditioning system doubles as the battery thermal management system. If the compressor starts making excessive noise, it needs urgent attention. Replacement is expensive, and neglecting it accelerates battery degradation.

   Independent BMW specialist garages in Hong Kong service the i3 at lower cost than the official dealer. Air conditioning filters are a simple DIY replacement every seven months. Brake fluid should be changed every two years.
