9 Things to Know Before Buying BMW iX1 in Hong Kong
Based on real owner experiences and reviews
01
The center console and gear selector are designed for left-hand drive and not properly mirrored for the right-hand-drive version sold in Hong Kong. The gear shifter sits to the left of center, which multiple owners find awkward to use.
02
Front seat comfort is a standout. Owners who tested the iX1 against Tesla Model Y and BYD alternatives consistently rated the BMW seats as more supportive on longer drives, with no lower back or seat pain after extended trips.
03
Real-world energy consumption sits around 17.8 kWh per 100 km over mixed driving after 1,000+ km. Not exceptionally efficient for its class, but not high either.
04
Pressing the start button three times with the car parked activates an engineering mode that keeps the air conditioning running indefinitely. Useful for waiting in the car with passengers or charging overnight without the cabin shutting down.
05
Front door trims are finished in leather, but the rear doors use hard plastic. The difference is immediately visible in the showroom and feels inconsistent on a car at this price point.
06
One-pedal driving with strong regenerative braking only activates in B mode. In D mode, the car coasts like a petrol vehicle. The energy recuperation level is also manually adjustable between High, Medium, Low, and Adaptive settings.
07
The iX1 is manufactured in Leipzig, Germany. The larger iX3, by contrast, is built in China. For buyers who factor in manufacturing origin, this is a meaningful difference within BMW's own EV lineup.
08
Rear legroom and headroom are noticeably tighter than the iX3 or Tesla Model Y. Front passengers sit well, but taller rear passengers may feel squeezed.
09
Adaptive suspension comes standard on the iX1, unlike the petrol X1 where it is an optional extra. This is a factory inclusion, not a dealer upsell.
